Every child deserves someone who stands up for them. At CASA of Kosciusko County, our volunteers give children something powerful: a voice.
When children enter the foster care system because of abuse or neglect, their world can feel confusing and unstable. CASA volunteers step in as consistent, caring adults who advocate for a child’s best interests in court and in the community.
You don’t need a legal background or special experience. You just need compassion, commitment, and a desire to help a child navigate one of the most difficult seasons of their life.

What Is A CASA?
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate.
A CASA volunteer serves as an advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect and are involved in the court system. Judges appoint CASAs to gather information, build relationships, and recommend what will serve the child’s best interests.
As a CASA, you may:
Spend time getting to know the child
Talk with teachers, caregivers, and caseworkers
Observe the child’s living situation and well-being
Write reports and provide recommendations to the judge
Advocate for services and support that help the child thrive
Who Can Volunteer?
CASA volunteers come from every background and profession.
Teachers, retirees, parents, business professionals, college graduates, and community members all serve as advocates. What matters most is your willingness to commit time and care to a child who needs someone in their corner.
Volunteers need to:
Be at least 21 years old
Pass a background check and screening process
Complete CASA training
Commit to serving a case for about one year
What To Expect As A Volunteer
Once the court assigns you to a case, you’ll begin building a connection with a child and learning about their situation. CASA volunteers typically meet with their assigned child regularly and stay in touch with the people involved in the child’s life.
During your time as a volunteer, you’ll:
Build trust with the child through consistent visits
Gather information about their needs and well-being
Attend court hearings and case meetings
Submit written recommendations to the judge
Advocate for safe, stable outcomes
